JONESBORO, Ark. — Arkansas State University has unveiled a new teaching barn dedicated to providing veterinary students with practical, hands-on experience. The facility, constructed at a cost of nearly $1 million, was introduced this fall as the university welcomed its first veterinary school class.
Dr. Heidi Banse, dean of the veterinary school, emphasized the barn’s importance in preparing students for real-world veterinary practice. "At this barn, they’ll be able to practice things like physical examinations, how to restrain a horse, halter them, lead them in and out of different areas like stocks and stalls, as well as learn various procedural skills such as using ultrasound," Banse explained.
She added that the facility is central to teaching core equine skills. "This barn will be an incredibly important part of our curriculum, helping our students gain hands-on experience with live animals," Banse said.
The project was made possible through a significant donation from longtime university supporter Dash Goff. Construction of the barn highlights Arkansas State University’s commitment to advancing veterinary education and fostering student success in the field.
The new teaching barn is expected to play a vital role as students develop skills essential to their future careers while contributing to the growth of veterinary education in Arkansas.
