WALNUT RIDGE, Ark. — School officials in Lawrence County said a weapon discovered on campus grounds was the result of what they described as a “dumb mistake.”

According to the Lawrence County School District, administrators received a report early Thursday morning about a possible weapon inside a vehicle parked on school property, prior to the start of classes.

Superintendent Jacob Kersey stated in a news release that administration acted promptly to investigate the matter. Kersey did not provide additional details, citing the involvement of a student in the incident. However, he emphasized that there was no threat to the school or its students.

“The situation has been addressed according to handbook policy,” Kersey said in the statement.

No additional information about the type of weapon or the student’s identity was disclosed.

School officials did not indicate whether law enforcement was involved. The district confirmed that the situation is resolved and declined to issue further comments.
