With the November General Election approaching, the Izard County Sheriff’s Office has reported an increase in incidents involving stolen or damaged political signs. Sheriff Charley Melton has outlined potential legal consequences for such actions and urged citizens to respect private property during the election season.

According to Melton, the unauthorized removal of a campaign sign from private property could lead to charges of theft. If the value of the stolen property is $1,000 or less, the offense is classified as a Class A misdemeanor under Arkansas law. Similarly, anyone who damages or destroys someone else’s campaign sign may face first-degree criminal mischief charges, also a Class A misdemeanor when the damage is $1,000 or less.

Melton further noted that entering private property without permission to tamper with signs might result in criminal trespass charges, a Class B misdemeanor.

In a statement, Melton called on residents to respect one another and allow the political process to unfold without interference. He also encouraged the public to report any observed incidents of sign theft or destruction to local law enforcement.

The sheriff emphasized the importance of maintaining civility and upholding the rights of property owners as the election draws closer.
