The City of Jonesboro is seeking community input on a proposed expansion of Joe Mack Campbell Park, which could nearly double its size and improve recreational opportunities through a matching grant program.
The expansion involves acquiring a 40-acre plot of land on the park's west side for $1 million from its current owners, according to Parks and Recreation Director Jim Stearns. If approved, the park’s footprint would increase from 40 acres to approximately 80 acres.
Funding for the project hinges partly on a matching grant from the Arkansas Department of Parks, Heritage, and Tourism. The grant would cover half of the acquisition cost and future renovations, explained Chris Richey, the city’s Grants and Community Development Director.
“This is going to be a green space that the citizens of Jonesboro will be able to enjoy for years to come as this town continues to grow,” Richey said, emphasizing that the project is designed to meet future growth rather than immediate needs.
City officials are also calling on residents to share their vision for how the expanded park should be utilized. Potential additions include fitness-focused amenities like walking tracks, a fishing pond, and expansions to the existing sports complex for soccer, softball, and baseball, Stearns said.
“Anything we can do to improve the quality of life of the citizens of Jonesboro is a win for everybody,” Stearns added.
Residents have until the end of July to provide feedback through the city’s Joe Mack Campbell Park survey. The city intends to consider the public’s input before moving forward with any plans.
