CRAIGHEAD COUNTY, Ark. — Authorities have charged a man with felony vehicle theft after an argument reportedly escalated over a coffee cup, according to a probable cause affidavit filed in Craighead County.
Randy Lloyd May is accused of taking a company vehicle valued between $5,000 and $25,000. The charge, a Class C felony, carries potential penalties of three to 10 years in prison and a fine of up to $10,000.
Craighead County deputies responded to the incident on Oct. 2 at approximately 8:45 a.m. after receiving a report of a stolen vehicle. According to the affidavit, a property director said an argument began when May left a coffee cup on a table and then threw it into a sink when asked to put it away.
The affidavit states that May allegedly reacted by saying, “If they wanted to act penitentiary he would show them penitentiary,” before leaving the property, entering a company vehicle, and driving away.
Searcy police later located and arrested May the same day while he was still in possession of the vehicle, according to the affidavit.
Court filings show that May’s bond was set at $10,000 cash or surety in an order dated Oct. 5. The order also suggested that May might qualify for drug court or veterans court programs.
May’s next court appearance is set for Nov. 23 at 8:30 a.m. in Craighead County Circuit Court.
The charge is an allegation, and May is presumed innocent unless proven guilty in court.
