KJ Edwards rushed for two touchdowns, and quarterback Marcel Reed threw for 170 yards and added a rushing score to lead Texas A&M to a decisive 34-7 victory over Arkansas on Saturday night in SEC play. The Aggies (3-2, 1-2 SEC) rebounded after back-to-back losses to Kentucky and LSU.
“This was a major win to get our confidence back,” Edwards said. “The last two weeks we’ve been kind of down, so it’s a good thing we got this win to keep it going.”
The Aggies surged ahead late in the first quarter, building a 14-0 lead on a 20-yard touchdown run by Edwards and a 2-yard score by Carsyn Baker, which followed a turnover. Arkansas (2-3, 0-2 SEC) answered with a 26-yard touchdown catch by Chris Marshall, cutting the lead to 14-7. However, Texas A&M scored 20 unanswered points to seal the game.
Reed’s 1-yard touchdown run shortly before halftime extended the lead to 21-7, and David Olano closed the first half with a career-long 57-yard field goal. Olano added another 50-yard field goal in the fourth quarter.
The Aggies’ ground game was key, with Edwards and Reed each rushing for 66 yards. In total, Texas A&M gained 231 rushing yards after being limited to just 68 the previous week in a loss to LSU. Head coach Mike Elko credited Reed’s ability to make plays on the move for sparking the offense. “I thought he was able to use his legs and get out on the perimeter a little bit,” Elko said. “That gets him in rhythm and gets him comfortable.”
Arkansas quarterback KJ Jackson threw for 111 yards, including a touchdown and an interception. Running back Braylen Russell was stopped for a two-yard loss on a critical fourth-and-goal play in the third quarter, marking a low point for the Razorbacks, who struggled on both sides of the ball.
“Every single person in the program, starting with me, needs to look in the mirror and find ways to improve,” Arkansas coach Ryan Silverfield said. “Be mad but find ways to get better.”
The Razorbacks will now prepare to host No. 17 Tennessee this Saturday, hoping to end a two-game losing streak. Meanwhile, Texas A&M aims to build on its momentum as it navigates the challenging SEC schedule ahead.
