Mountain Home High School honored former head football coach Bill Breedlove by inducting him into the Mountain Home Athletics Hall of Honor during a ceremony on Saturday. Breedlove, widely regarded as a transformative figure in local athletics, reflected on his coaching career and expressed gratitude for the recognition.
Breedlove's journey in football began as a standout running back for Arkansas Tech University’s Wonder Boys. He was part of the team that reached the NAIA National Championship game in 1971, finishing the season as runners-up. However, an injury during his senior year derailed his college playing days. Shortly afterward, he was offered a position as an assistant football coach at Mountain Home, marking the start of his coaching career in the Twin Lakes area.
In 1974, Breedlove joined the Bombers under head coach Bill Pratt. That first season, the team finished with a 1-9 record, competing against larger programs such as Sylvan Hills, Paragould, and Newport. The Bombers’ sole victory that year came in the season opener against Marshall, with a final score of 28-0. The following year, Breedlove was promoted to head coach, leading the Bombers to a modest improvement with a 2-8 record, including wins over Willow Springs and Ava, Missouri.
Breedlove’s impact became evident in his third season, when he adjusted the Bombers' schedule to better align with the team’s capabilities. The result was a 6-4 record in 1976, including victories over Bald Knob, Clarksville, Siloam Springs, and Batesville. By 1977, the Bombers achieved a remarkable turnaround, going 9-2 and claiming the 1AAA conference championship. That season featured notable wins over Newport, Siloam Springs, Bentonville, Batesville, and Harrison, propelling the team into the playoffs. Despite a hard-fought loss to Van Buren in the postseason, the Bombers’ success cemented Breedlove’s reputation as a skilled and strategic leader.
In his final year as head coach in 1978, Breedlove once again guided Mountain Home to a first-place 1AAA conference finish. The team recorded critical victories over rivals including Harrison, where a game-winning field goal by Omar Mathias secured a narrow 16-14 win. The Bombers ended the season with an 8-3 record, falling to Alma in the playoffs.
Breedlove credited much of his success to his assistant coaches and the support of the Mountain Home community, saying, "I couldn’t have been a successful head coach without the help of assistants Gary Williams, Larry McNair, and Barney Crawford." He also humorously recalled attending his first school board meeting, one of many fond memories from his time in Mountain Home.
Reflecting on his induction into the Athletic Hall of Honor, Breedlove expressed deep gratitude, calling it an unforgettable milestone in his life.
The Hall of Honor ceremony included a reception at noon, followed by the official induction at 1 p.m. in the Mountain Home High School cafeteria.
