The Mountain Home Bombers earned a decisive 30-13 victory over the Russellville Cyclones on Friday night at Bomber Stadium, advancing to 2-0 in the 6A-West conference.
Mountain Home struck first with a four-yard touchdown run by Naz Johnson. Following their early lead, Russellville responded with a 61-yard touchdown run to go ahead 7-6 with 6:49 remaining in the first quarter.
The momentum shifted back to the Bombers during their second possession, with Johnson’s 32-yard gain setting up a 36-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Conner Gentry to Gus Wilber. Isaac Ballard’s extra point brought the Bombers ahead at 13-7. Russellville quickly answered with a 38-yard touchdown pass, tying the game at 13-13 with 3:41 left in the opening quarter.
Despite an interception thrown by Gentry on the next Bombers possession, Mountain Home's defense held firm, forcing a Cyclones punt. A promising 40-yard rush by Johnson brought the Bombers offense deep into Russellville territory, but a holding penalty negated a subsequent touchdown and eventually led to a turnover on downs. Defensive stops by the Bombers kept the Cyclones from capitalizing.
In the second quarter, a key interception by Colt Thomas set the Bombers up at the Cyclones' 45-yard line. However, neither team managed to break the 13-13 tie heading into halftime.
The second half opened with a Russellville fumble recovered by Mountain Home’s Ford Coleman at the Cyclones' 36-yard line. Two plays later, Gentry connected with Wilber for a 32-yard touchdown. Ballard’s extra point extended the Bombers’ lead to 20-13 with 10:48 remaining in the third quarter.
Mountain Home’s special teams play proved critical when Kobe Dotson blocked a Cyclones punt, allowing Saxton Bodenhamer to recover the ball at the Russellville 13-yard line. While another holding penalty pushed the Bombers’ offense back, Ballard converted a 24-yard field goal to make it 23-13 with 8:40 left in the third.
Defensive pressure continued in the fourth quarter as Coleman and Corbin Lefevers combined for a sack that forced a critical loss for Russellville. Wilber added an interception that initially appeared to set the Bombers up near Russellville’s goal line, although the play was called back due to a penalty. Nonetheless, Mountain Home maintained possession.
The Bombers sealed their victory late in the game when Brayden Rauls intercepted a Cyclones pass and returned it 37 yards for a touchdown. Ballard’s ensuing extra point brought the final score to 30-13.
The Bombers will look to continue their strong conference start as they travel to face Little Rock Southwest next Friday in another 6A-West matchup.
