Runners and walkers looking for a unique racing experience can participate in the upcoming Run the Runway 5K and 1-mile walk, set for Saturday, Oct. 24, at the Baxter County Airport near Midway. Hosted by the Leading Edge Aviation Foundation, the event offers participants a rare chance to traverse the airport’s 5,000-foot runway, which is typically restricted to those involved in aviation activities.

The race begins at 7:30 a.m., with registration priced at $25 for either the 5K run or the 1-mile walk. Online registration is open at pirateperryevents.com through Oct. 18. Late registrants can sign up and pick up race packets on-site from 6:30 to 7:15 a.m. the morning of the event. Participants who register before the deadline will receive a race shirt.

Spanning nearly a mile in length, the airport's single runway serves as the centerpiece of the event. Volunteers will guide participants along the course, which includes a partial loop for the 5K run near the halfway point. Both the 5K and 1-mile walk are open to individuals of all ages and abilities, making the event accessible for a range of fitness levels and families seeking a fun activity.

The 5K race will feature chip timing and a gun start, with medals awarded to all finishers. Awards will also be given to the top three men and women overall, as well as the top three finishers in nine age divisions ranging from age 9 and under to 70 and older. An on-course aid station will be available to runners, who will pass it twice during the 5K, and refreshments will be provided at the finish line.

In addition to the race, the event serves as an open house for the Baxter County Airport, giving the public an opportunity to learn more about its operations. Attendees can meet the pilots and mechanics working at the facility and explore areas of the airport rarely accessible to the general public. Organizers aim to provide a behind-the-scenes look at an airport that plays a key role in the region, handling approximately 11,500 takeoffs and landings annually, according to Federal Aviation Administration data. The airport is home to 74 aircraft and supports a mix of medical flights, business travel, and recreational visitors.

Run the Runway follows the Crosswind Classic event in August, which featured a car show, pilot poker run, and vintage warbirds. Both events are part of efforts to engage the local community and showcase the airport’s role in Baxter County. The October run and walk will also mark the conclusion of the airport’s major public events before winter.

Families and first-time participants are encouraged to join in, with the 1-mile walk designed to be an easy and enjoyable introduction to the morning's activities. For more information or to register, visit pirateperryevents.com.
