A representative from the Sharp County Conservation and NRCS Office presented the office’s annual report during the Sharp County Quorum Court meeting, detailing completed projects and the use of the county's yearly funding. As part of the presentation, the representative requested $15,000 in county funding to be considered during the upcoming budget planning process. They also noted that each dollar of this allocation would be matched with an additional $131 from outside sources.
In a separate report, County Extension Agent Wes Newman updated the court on services offered by the Arkansas Cooperative Extension Service. Specific details of these services were not disclosed during the session.
County Judge Mark Counts announced key upcoming dates for county officials, setting the annual budget planning meeting for Monday, November 2, and the regular monthly meeting of the Quorum Court for Monday, November 16.
The court also discussed updates to the county’s 911 system, which are performed every five years. Sheriff Shane Russell outlined the benefits of a new system that would allow individuals in dangerous situations to send text messages to 911 when making voice calls is unsafe. Sheriff Russell noted that the updated system would cost $70,000, with the state reimbursing $35,000. He explained that the 911 budget currently lacks the funds to cover the cost.
After hearing from County Treasurer Wanda Girtman, officials agreed on the necessity of the upgrade. The court approved a motion to proceed with the purchase, using funds transferred from the county’s general savings account to the 911 budget. Once the $35,000 reimbursement is received from the state, those funds will be returned to the savings account.
The new 911 system is expected to enhance public safety by improving emergency communication options for residents of Sharp County.
