Preparations have begun for the ninth annual Living Legends Awards, an event held during Black History Month to honor individuals who have made a meaningful impact in their communities. Nominations for the awards are open throughout October, providing an opportunity for community members to recognize and celebrate local leaders.
"It's important for our community to take part in the nomination process because many individuals who make the greatest impact do so quietly, consistently, and without seeking recognition," said Carnesha Ben, a member of the Living Legends Awards committee. According to Ben, community involvement ensures that nominees reflect the values and voices of those they serve. “When people nominate those they have seen making a difference, it ensures that the Living Legends Awards truly reflect the voices and values of the community we serve,” Ben added.
This year's theme, "From Black Print Culture to Digital Blackness," highlights the evolution of Black storytelling and cultural expression. "The theme honors the ways Black voices have preserved history, built community, and influenced social change across generations," Ben explained. The committee views the awards as an opportunity to celebrate individuals whose work has a lasting impact and aligns with the spirit of Black History Month by uplifting stories of leadership, resilience, and service.
Ben emphasized the importance of carefully considering nominations, citing specific examples of the nominee’s leadership, advocacy, collaboration, or service as elements that strengthen submissions. "We look for nominations that clearly demonstrate how the nominee has contributed to A-State or surrounding communities through leadership, advocacy, collaboration, or service," Ben said. Strong nominations include examples of projects led, initiatives supported, or other ways the nominee has made a positive difference.
