The Arkansas Department of Transportation (ARDOT) has issued a reminder to political candidates and their supporters that placing campaign signs on highway right of way is prohibited under state law. Only official directional, informational, and regulatory signs are permitted on property owned by the state’s highway system. Campaign materials and other unauthorized signage are not allowed and will be removed, officials said.
“It is important to keep highway right of ways clear for the safety of both drivers and road workers,” ARDOT Director Jared Wiley stated in a public release.
ARDOT personnel are responsible for removing yard signs found in violation of the law. In cases involving larger billboard-style signs, the sign’s owners will be contacted and instructed to remove their displays.
Signs that have been removed by ARDOT can be picked up during normal business hours at the nearest ARDOT Area Maintenance Office. The department encourages compliance to ensure roadway safety and to avoid inconvenience for campaign teams and supporters.
