JONESBORO, Ark. – The Northeast Arkansas Humane Society is lowering adoption fees as part of an ongoing initiative to find homes for its animals during the 'Empty the Shelters' event.
Lisa Trevatham, the shelter’s community outreach coordinator, noted that finding homes for dogs has become increasingly difficult as pet food and veterinary care costs climb.
“The money and donations … help us take care of these little guys,” Trevatham said, adding that donor support ensures the animals receive the care they need. Referring to a specific case, she mentioned, “this one came in and we needed some canned food for the little tiny tots because that’s all they were eating because they were so small and, as you can tell, we got big bellies now. We’re doing well. It takes a village and we love our supporters and we couldn’t do it without them.”
Shelter officials hope the event will ease the growing strain on resources while giving the animals a chance to find permanent homes in the community.
The 'Empty the Shelters' event concludes on Wednesday.
