The Mountain Home Education Foundation (MHEF) will celebrate the achievements of five outstanding graduates during its 2026 Night of Honors event, including Kevin Scherer, who will be recognized as Outstanding Alumni. The event is slated for Thursday evening at The Sheid on the Arkansas State University-Mountain Home campus.
Scherer, a 1985 graduate of Mountain Home High School, has dedicated his career to ministry, pastoral counseling, and humanitarian service. A former Eastern Orthodox priest, he holds two graduate degrees in theology and possesses over 20 years of pastoral counseling experience. He is also a published author whose writings focus on themes of healing, hope, and human dignity.
Throughout his career, Scherer has been called to serve during some of the nation’s most challenging times. Following the September 11, 2001, terrorist attacks, he served as a chaplain at Ground Zero through the New York City Office of Emergency Management and the American Red Cross. Scherer provided spiritual care to survivors, victims’ families, and first responders. His work continued in the aftermath of the Virginia Tech and Northern Illinois University campus shootings, and he has also contributed to the International Orthodox Christian Charities Emergency Response Network and served on a Search and Rescue Team affiliated with Spokane Emergency Management.
Currently, Scherer resides in Northwest Arkansas, where he continues his commitment to service as the Director of Chaplaincy for Tyson Foods, a role he describes as deeply fulfilling.
Mollie Morgan, Executive Director of the Mountain Home Education Foundation, emphasized Scherer’s dedication to his work and the people he serves, stating it made him an ideal choice for the recognition.
Reflecting on his roots, Scherer noted that his time in Mountain Home during his formative years provided crucial stability. He also recalled a memorable moment from high school that became part of local lore and solidified his lifelong connection to the Bombers.
The Night of Honors will spotlight the significant contributions and lasting impacts of each inductee, including Scherer. The annual event aims to inspire current students and celebrate the achievements of Mountain Home graduates who have left meaningful marks on their fields and communities.
