Batesville Help and Hope, a nonprofit serving the community since 1987, is addressing a growing demand for assistance with plans for operational changes and facility improvements. Increased need follows adjustments to federal SNAP benefits that have driven more families to the organization for help.
Board member Shannon Hix noted that the pantry has seen an additional 140 to 150 households seeking assistance each month since July, while food donations have dropped by approximately half during the same timeframe. This heightened demand underscores the importance of the organization's latest efforts.
Local businesses are stepping in to support the nonprofit. Sherwin-Williams is sponsoring outdoor improvements to the facility, while employee volunteers from Peco will assist with interior updates starting in October. The changes aim to enhance both the functionality and atmosphere of the facility.
Another significant shift is the transition to a "choice pantry" model, a move announced by board member Laurie Gottschalk. This new system will replace pre-packaged food boxes with an approach that allows clients to select grocery items that best meet their needs, providing a more personalized experience.
As the nonprofit expands its services, it is also seeking community involvement. Help and Hope is inviting volunteers to assist with food sorting, clothing organization, and donation management.
