LITTLE ROCK, Ark. — With election season approaching, the Arkansas Department of Transportation (ARDOT) has issued a reminder to candidates and their supporters: campaign signs are not allowed on highway rights of way.
Under state law, only official highway signs—such as directional, informational, and regulatory markers—can be placed on state-owned highway property. Any other signs, including campaign advertisements, are considered unauthorized and will be removed by ARDOT's local Area Maintenance Offices.
“It is important to keep highway rights of way clear for the safety of both drivers and road workers,” ARDOT Director Jared Wiley said in a news release issued Friday.
According to the department, ARDOT personnel will remove any yard signs placed in these restricted areas. Owners of larger billboard campaign signs that violate the law will be contacted and asked to take them down themselves. Removed signs can be retrieved during normal business hours at the nearest ARDOT maintenance office.
