The Baxter County Health Unit, part of the Arkansas Department of Health (ADH), is hosting a free drive-thru flu vaccine clinic on Friday at its new location at 850 Buttercup Drive in Mountain Home. The event will run from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., with residents asked to enter through the south entrance on Buttercup Drive, drive under the building’s canopy for their vaccination, and exit at the rear onto Buttercup Drive.
Participants are encouraged to bring their insurance cards, though the vaccine will remain free for those without insurance or whose plans do not cover flu immunizations. "We want Baxter County residents to stay healthy this flu season, and getting a yearly flu vaccination is the best line of defense," said Stacey Ferretti, Baxter County Health Unit administrator. "We encourage everyone to come to the community event or the local health unit to get their flu shot."
For residents unable to attend the clinic, flu shots will also be available during regular hours at the Baxter County Health Unit. Annual flu vaccination is recommended for most individuals aged six months or older.
"The flu should not be taken lightly," said Dr. Jennifer Dillaha, ADH’s chief medical officer. "We are encouraging everyone to get a flu shot to protect themselves and their families, because it is hard to predict in advance how severe the flu season is going to be."
According to the ADH, the flu virus spreads through coughing, sneezing, and contact with contaminated objects like door handles or handrails. The department strongly advises vaccination for older adults, young children, pregnant women, individuals with chronic health conditions, smokers, and nursing home residents. Friends, family, and caregivers of individuals in these groups are also encouraged to get vaccinated.
Health authorities assure that the flu vaccine is safe and does not cause the flu, though some people may experience mild side effects such as soreness at the injection site, a slight headache, or a low-grade fever.
