The Northeast Arkansas District Fair kicked off its 88th year on Thursday, introducing heightened security measures following a 2025 incident involving reports of gunfire near the fairgrounds in Jonesboro. Although investigators found no evidence of a shooting last year, organizers are taking additional precautions this year to prioritize safety.
“This year, we’ve significantly increased our security budget,” fair manager Mitch Johnson said. “We have off-duty Jonesboro security officers on-site, and part-time reserve officers are monitoring the parking lots. With these measures, we have plenty of security personnel ensuring a safe environment.”
In addition to bolstered staffing, the fair has implemented a new clear-bag policy at the gate. “It’s all about safety,” Johnson explained. “We want everyone to have a fun and secure experience at the fair, and the clear-bag policy helps us achieve that.”
Admission to the fair is $6 for adults Monday through Friday, $3 for children 12 and under, and free for kids age 3 and younger. On Saturdays, admission is $6 for anyone age 4 or older. Unlimited ride wristbands are available for $30 each day, except Tuesday, which features discounted pricing as part of the “Two for Tuesday” promotion.
“On Tuesday, September 29, gate admission is $2 for everyone, and all midway rides, as well as select food and game options, are available for $2,” Johnson said.
This year, the fair is also reviving commercial booths, offering local businesses an opportunity to showcase their goods and services inside the fairgrounds. “We have limited booth space available for commercial exhibits,” Johnson noted. “We encourage businesses to call our office at 935-4331 to secure a spot before they sell out.”
The fair will run through October 3, with daily closing hours set at 11 p.m., and will remain closed Sunday for a special Sensory Night event. For additional information or updates, fairgoers should contact organizers directly.
