JONESBORO, Ark. — Thousands of families in Northeast Arkansas face uncertainty about their next meal, but the Food Bank of Northeast Arkansas is stepping up its efforts during Hunger Action Month to address food insecurity in the region.
Amber Oxley, a development officer at the food bank, explained the initiative. “Hunger Action Month is a national campaign that’s intended to raise awareness and inspire action whenever it comes to fighting hunger,” Oxley said.
Inside the food bank, empty shelves highlight the level of need, and staff have been working long hours to keep supplies moving. Several local businesses have joined the cause, making it easier for the community to participate. Contributions from Domino’s, Panda Express, and Shadrachs Coffee are helping to support food distribution efforts.
Chrissy Holbrook, another development officer at the food bank, said the Shadrachs fundraiser was particularly successful. “We’ve seen, so far we do have Shadrachs total back, which is over $3,000 was raised that day,” she said, noting that even small contributions go far. “For every dollar raised, we’re able to provide about three meals. So Hunger Action Month coming together as a community to fight hunger is really important to us.”
Holbrook emphasized that anyone in need of food assistance can reach out directly to the food bank. “They are more than welcome to come up here and we will help find them the closest food pantry to where they are located. Or they can call us at 870-932-3663,” she said.
For families unable to attend food distributions during regular hours, another local organization, Provision 88, is stepping in. Their Working Families Feeding Program provides food every Tuesday evening from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. at 1405 Bittle Street in Jonesboro. Alan Decker, director of Provision 88, said the program is designed to accommodate those who work during the day. “Our mission statement is to make a difference where you are. And so we want to do that one family at a time,” Decker said.
He added that the initiative offers more than just food. “We love God, we love people, and we hope that it shows when they come in contact with us to get food, clothing, and friendship as well.”
Hunger Action Day, which falls on Tuesday, Sept. 29, will feature additional opportunities to contribute. A portion of the proceeds from purchases made at Gearhead Outfitters that day will go to the food bank, providing another avenue for the community to support the cause.
