Health officials are urging Arkansas residents to make flu vaccinations a priority this season, with an additional choice now available for older adults.

According to local pharmacist Jett Jones of The Medicine Shoppe in Jonesboro, flu vaccines are critical in reducing the potential severity of illness. "Getting your flu shot can help prevent you from getting the flu," Jones said. "Even if you do get the flu, it helps keep you out of the hospital and prevents complications like pneumonia."

This fall, there are three flu vaccine options, with recommendations tailored to different age groups. The standard flu shot is designed for anyone aged six months or older. For older adults, higher-dose vaccines are available: one for those 55 and older, and another specifically targeted for those 65 and older.

A notable introduction this year is the first-ever mRNA flu vaccine, now available to individuals aged 55 and older. The University of Rochester explains that mRNA vaccines teach the body’s cells to produce a harmless protein from the flu virus, training the immune system to recognize and combat the illness before it can cause harm.

Jones highlighted the importance of the higher-dose options for seniors, explaining that aging weakens immune systems over time. “That high-dose flu shot has a little bit more in it to help create a stronger immune response,” Jones said. “It’s an extra layer of protection for older populations who need it.”

For most individuals with health insurance, the flu shot is expected to be covered at no cost. Arkansans are encouraged to consult their healthcare providers to determine the best vaccine option for their age and health status as the flu season begins.
