PARAGOULD, Ark. — A Paragould woman has been charged with second-degree battery after she was reportedly seen dragging a child by the ankle at a pediatric care center, authorities said.
According to an affidavit, officers were called on July 27 to Arkids Pediatric Day Centers, located at 528 U.S. Highway 49 North, in response to allegations of child abuse. Police said staff and parents at the center reported that 49-year-old Nola D. Burney, of Rector, was involved in the incident.
Investigators subsequently reviewed documents and obtained surveillance footage from July 24, which police say showed Burney dragging the child down a hallway inside the facility. Based on the evidence, District Judge Curtis Hitt found probable cause to charge Burney with second-degree battery.
She is currently being held in the Greene County Detention Center on a $100,000 surety bond, court records indicate. Burney has also been ordered to avoid contact with the victim, any witnesses, and others associated with the case.
No further details about the child or the extent of injuries were disclosed by authorities. Officials have not commented on whether additional parties may be involved.
Arkansas law classifies second-degree battery as a Class D felony, which carries potential penalties involving prison time and fines. The investigation is ongoing.
