JONESBORO, Ark. — Dr. Landon Jackson has made history as the first alumnus to join the full-time faculty at the New York Institute of Technology College of Osteopathic Medicine (NYITCOM) at Arkansas State University, the school announced in a news release.
Jackson, who was a member of NYITCOM at A-State’s inaugural class in 2016, began his role as an assistant professor in the clinical medicine department in August. He is currently teaching first- and second-year medical students and serving as a clinical mentor for third- and fourth-year students through his surgical practice at St. Bernards Medical Center in Jonesboro.
“When we cast the vision for our medical school, Dr. Jackson was exactly the type of physician we hoped to train,” said Dr. Shane Speights, dean of NYITCOM at A-State.
A native of Greenbrier, Jackson earned his undergraduate degree at the University of Arkansas before entering NYITCOM at A-State as part of its first cohort. During his time at the school, he earned a Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine degree, as well as a master’s degree in academic medicine through the school’s academic scholars program. He later completed a general surgery residency at Oklahoma State University Center for Health Sciences in Tulsa.
“I’m honored to have the opportunity to return to NYITCOM at A-State to begin my career,” Jackson said. “The education and training that I received here was exceptional, and I am extremely proud to call myself an alumnus and now faculty member.”
NYITCOM at A-State was established in 2016 on the Arkansas State University campus in Jonesboro and focuses on improving access to health care in underserved and rural communities in Arkansas and the Mississippi Delta, according to the school.
Jackson’s appointment marks a significant milestone in the school’s mission to train medical professionals who are committed to meeting the region’s health care needs.
