Sparse Crowd and Stray Skunk Mark Razorbacks’ Home Game Against Georgia

A skunk caused a stir at Donald W. Reynolds Razorback Stadium on Saturday, hours before No. 2 Georgia faced Arkansas in Fayetteville. The animal scurried onto the field near a corner of the end zone and climbed stadium steps before disappearing. Its presence, paired with sparse tailgating and an underwhelming crowd, seemed to embody the current state of Arkansas football under first-year head coach Ryan Silverfield. Silverfield joined the Razorbacks after his tenure at Memphis during the offseason.

The university had announced plans for a “red-and-white stripe out” in the stands, but the resulting visual fell far short of the intended effect. Most fans clustered near the middle of the lower bowl, leaving much of the upper deck empty. Tickets were reportedly being resold for as low as $9 the night before the noon kickoff time.

The Razorbacks fell to Georgia by a score of 45-17. The Bulldogs, led by quarterback Gunner Stockton, relied primarily on their ground game, while Stockton completed just 13 passing attempts. Georgia’s backup quarterback, Ryan Puglisi, added 63 passing yards and a touchdown in late-game action. Arkansas rotated quarterbacks KJ Jackson and AJ Hill throughout the game in their search for offensive consistency.

Discontent among fans had been visible on social media in the days leading up to the game, with hashtags like “#BoycottArkansasFootball” gaining traction. One widely shared image, an edited version of the university's stripe-out promotion, replaced the phrase “Stripe Out The Stadium” with “Empty Out The Stadium.”

Fan frustration came amid broader discussions about the future of Razorback athletics. The University of Arkansas Board of Trustees held a meeting the day before the game and approved a resolution to review the competitiveness of its athletic programs.

While attendance swelled somewhat closer to kickoff, the overall turnout and game-day atmosphere were far from ideal for an SEC program. For now, Arkansas remains in search of greater fan support and improvements on the field as it continues its season.
