The Arkansas Zoological Foundation has committed $1.2 million to support the Little Rock Zoo’s ambitious revitalization initiative, Project Zoo: Wildly Reimagined. According to foundation officials, the donation is the largest in its history and will help move the project closer to completion.
The contribution includes $250,000 from the Laura P. Nichols Foundation, as well as proceeds from zoo-hosted fundraising events and donations from individual, corporate, and community supporters. It will supplement over $11 million in bond funding approved by Little Rock voters for the project.
Project Zoo: Wildly Reimagined is designed to enhance visitors’ experiences while improving the zoo’s facilities for its animals. Plans include new habitats for species such as lemurs, anteaters, and tortoises, along with a mixed-species exhibit featuring capybaras and squirrel monkeys. Visitors will also be able to engage with animals through experiences like feeding tortoises. Other upgrades include renovations to the zoo’s amphitheater to support conservation and education programs.
Zoo officials described the project as one of the largest undertakings in the facility’s history. "This investment highlights the community’s shared vision for creating a world-class zoo in Arkansas," they said in a statement.
Fundraising events such as Wild Wines, Zoo Brew and Cocktails, Too, and GloWild have been key drivers in building support for the campaign. Donations from individuals, businesses, and community organizations have also played a significant role. Efforts to secure additional funds will continue as the zoo works toward the project’s planned grand opening in spring 2027.
Zoo leaders invite the public to contribute to the initiative, emphasizing that further support will help ensure the project delivers on its promise to elevate the zoo into a more immersive and educational destination for the region.
