Rodney Vagenas, 64, with a listed address in West Plains, Missouri, appeared in Baxter County Circuit Court on September 8 to face charges related to retail theft allegations at the Mountain Home Walmart. Vagenas, who has a documented history of similar offenses in Arkansas, Missouri, and other states, pleaded not guilty during his court appearance.
According to the probable cause affidavit, Vagenas entered the Walmart in Mountain Home on September 25, 2025, shortly before 8:30 p.m. Store surveillance reportedly captured Vagenas selecting items from various departments and placing them in a shopping cart. He then proceeded to the Lawn and Garden section, where he was seen unlocking a door, pushing the cart outside, and leaving without paying. Investigators stated the doors to that section are routinely locked by 7 p.m. each night. The value of the merchandise taken from the Mountain Home store was approximately $670.
Authorities also linked Vagenas to other alleged thefts through a networked asset protection system used across Walmart locations. Records indicate a similar incident at the West Plains Walmart in December last year. In that case, Vagenas was accused of placing items, including a cordless impact driver, in a cart and using a knife to cut through plastic sheeting in the Lawn and Garden section to move the items out of the store. Investigators allege he retrieved the stolen items the following day and loaded them into his vehicle.
Court records show that Vagenas has faced theft-related charges in multiple Missouri counties, including Greene, Howell, Bates, and Christian. He has also been accused of stealing mail in federal cases. In addition to arrests in Arkansas and Missouri, Vagenas was convicted of theft in Pennsylvania in 2022 and retail fraud in Michigan in 2023. At the time of his most recent arrest in Mountain Home, he was reportedly on probation in Missouri.
During his Baxter County court appearance, Vagenas requested a lower bond, but Circuit Judge Andrew Bailey denied the request. His bond remains set at $10,000. Vagenas is being held at the Baxter County Detention Center and is scheduled to reappear in court on October 12.
