A minor earthquake was detected near Mount Pleasant early Sunday morning, the U.S. Geological Survey reported. The event, measuring a magnitude of 1.7, occurred at a depth of approximately 2.5 miles.
This marks the second earthquake in the area within a week. The first, registering a magnitude of 2.6, took place on Thursday, July 20, according to the Geological Survey. Both incidents were reported in the same general region, located about 15 miles northwest of Batesville.
No reports of the earthquake being felt by residents or causing damage have surfaced. Earthquakes of this magnitude are often too weak to be noticed by people on the surface but can be registered by seismic monitoring equipment.
Mount Pleasant, a small community in Izard County, is not typically known for its seismic activity. However, minor earthquakes do occasionally occur in Arkansas, particularly in the northern and eastern parts of the state, which are bisected by fault lines. Local officials have issued no warnings or advisories related to these recent seismic events.
