The Craighead County Quorum Court has approved an ordinance establishing a 15-ton weight limit on County Road 780, aiming to protect the recently improved road from heavy truck traffic.
The decision, announced Tuesday, was made in response to wear and tear caused by trucks transporting materials to and from a nearby gravel pit. According to the court, the increasing strain on the road has led to significant maintenance costs, including patching and repaving.
The Quorum Court noted that the county and private partnerships have invested considerable resources in the paved road, and alternate routes are available for trucks accessing the pit. The weight restriction is an effort to preserve the road’s condition and prevent further expenses.
Under the ordinance, violators will face a $100 fine for each day of each violation, along with $100 in court costs. Collected funds will be allocated to the Craighead County Road Fund to support road maintenance and improvements.
County officials emphasized that the measure is necessary to ensure the longevity of local infrastructure and reduce the financial burden of repeated repairs.
