Hot and humid weather continues to grip North Central Arkansas, with the National Weather Service (NWS) issuing a heat advisory through Tuesday evening as temperatures soar into the upper 90s and heat index values exceed 100 degrees.
According to the latest NWS briefing in Little Rock, high temperatures in the region are expected to remain in the upper 90s for much of the week, with overnight lows ranging from the upper 60s to lower 70s. The heat index, a measure of perceived temperature factoring in humidity, is expected to stay elevated through midweek.
The NWS notes that recent rainfall has contributed to the high humidity levels, intensifying afternoon heat. Major heat risk is forecast for much of the state, though conditions are expected to begin improving later this weekend as an upper-level ridge shifts away and a cold front approaches. The front is anticipated to bring increased rainfall chances early next week.
Drought concerns also persist, with nearly all of Arkansas experiencing some level of drought. The latest report indicates severe to extreme drought in many areas, and the Climate Prediction Center expects these conditions to continue through September.
Residents are advised to take precautions during this period of extreme heat. The NWS recommends staying hydrated, minimizing strenuous outdoor activity during peak afternoon hours, and using air conditioning for cooling. Fans alone may not provide sufficient relief during high heat and humidity.
