With summer temperatures climbing and children out of school, the City of Jonesboro's Parks and Recreation director is offering advice to families on staying safe while enjoying outdoor activities.
Jim Stearns, who heads the city's Parks and Recreation Department, emphasized the importance of preparation and close monitoring during outings to local parks or other recreation areas. “If you are going to the park, I would say pack a cooler — bring water, Gatorade, or a sports drink,” Stearns recommended.
Stearns underscored the value of dressing children in light-colored clothing, which can help them stay cooler. He also urged parents to watch for any signs of distress or unusual behavior in their kids while they play, suggesting that awareness is key to preventing heat-related incidents.
For families visiting the water park, Stearns noted that while the aquatic setting provides relief from the heat, hydration and preparation remain critical. “Bringing a cooler and keeping kids hydrated is still just as important,” he stated.
These tips come at a time when Arkansas often experiences triple-digit heat, and child safety remains a focal point for local authorities. Parents and guardians are encouraged to approach outdoor plans thoughtfully to ensure a fun and healthy summer for their families.
