A high-speed chase through Pocahontas ended Friday night with a fiery crash and the arrest of a 19-year-old suspect, according to Police Chief David Edington.
Officers pursued Trae Harris of Pocahontas at speeds exceeding 100 mph before the chase ended on Highway 67 South, outside the city, Edington said. During the pursuit, Harris allegedly attempted to brake-check officers in an effort to cause a collision.
The incident escalated when Harris struck another vehicle carrying two occupants, causing it to crash and ignite, the police chief said. Both individuals were able to escape the burning vehicle without serious injuries.
Harris was taken into custody and booked into the Randolph County Jail. Online records show he is facing multiple charges, including felony fleeing, reckless driving, and two counts of aggravated assault. Harris is being held without bond and is scheduled to appear for a bond hearing on Monday.
The crash and fire are under investigation. No additional details about the condition of the two occupants or the extent of the damage were immediately released.
