The Izard County Cougars claimed a hard-fought 26-22 victory over the visiting Cave City Cavemen in an 8-man football matchup Friday night at Cougar Stadium.
Cave City opened the scoring with a touchdown to take an early 6-0 lead. Izard County responded quickly when Brandon Treet connected with James Downs for a 45-yard touchdown, tying the game at 6-6 in the first quarter. Downs later hauled in a 24-yard touchdown pass, followed by a successful two-point run from Brogan Pospisil, giving the Cougars a 14-6 advantage.
Just before halftime, Keylan Gross recovered an onside kick for Izard County, adding to the momentum. The Cougars extended their lead early in the second half when Pospisil found Downs again for another touchdown, making it 20-6.
Cave City mounted a strong comeback, scoring a touchdown and converting for two points, bringing the score to 20-14. In a crucial moment, Izard County's Kane Johnson broke through for a 19-yard rushing touchdown, pushing the lead to 26-14. However, the Cavemen were not done. They scored once more and completed a two-point conversion to narrow the deficit to 26-22.
With the game on the line, Cave City drove into Cougar territory late in the fourth quarter, but Izard County’s defense came up big, intercepting a pass to seal the win.
The victory marked another strong showing for the Cougars' 8-man squad, who relied on key plays from a mix of offensive and defensive standouts throughout the contest.
