Jonesboro, Ark. — The City of Jonesboro has received a Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification (WARN) concerning Delta Peanut, a local peanut processing plant, according to city officials.
The WARN Act is a federal law requiring employers with 100 or more workers to notify employees and local government officials at least 60 days before significant layoffs or a facility closure. The notice aims to give affected workers and their communities time to plan for the impact.
Brian Richardson, the city’s chief administrative officer, confirmed receipt of the notification. In a statement, Richardson emphasized the city's focus on aiding employees who may be affected by potential staff reductions or restructuring at the facility.
"Any time we hear of possible restructuring or facility closures, our number one concern is the well-being of the employees and their families," Richardson said. "We will work closely with the Chamber of Commerce and our industrial partners to help find suitable placement."
Delta Peanut, headquartered in Jonesboro, has not yet commented on whether workforce changes or a closure is imminent at the local plant. The company’s response to the matter is pending.
The situation underscores the impact of federal notification policies designed to mitigate the effects of sudden employment disruptions. Local leaders have signaled their intention to support affected employees, should the notice lead to job losses.
