JONESBORO, Ark. – Arkansas State University’s veterinary school is now accepting applications for its fall 2027 class, according to Dean Heidi Banse. The program, which opened its doors in August, is Arkansas’s first veterinary college.
A-State is seeking 120 well-rounded students for next year, evaluating applicants based on academic performance, extracurricular involvement, leadership roles, work history, and experience with animals. Students can apply either through the Veterinary Medical College Application Service (VMCAS) or directly through the university’s website by the Sept. 15 deadline.
Applicants must hold a bachelor’s degree in science or a related field, along with completed coursework in biology, biochemistry, organic chemistry, and physics. While a minimum GPA is not specified, Banse noted that a science GPA of 3.5 or higher is ideal. Advanced classes such as microbiology, statistics, or calculus may further strengthen an application.
“Our program uses a holistic admissions process,” Banse said. “We want students to be able to show us the breadth of their experiences, not just their academic achievements.”
The school emphasizes hands-on learning with both small and large animals, giving students practical training starting in their first year. A-State recently unveiled two state-of-the-art barns, with one dedicated to cattle and the other to horses.
“The cattle barn is equipped with eight manual chutes for students to safely practice handling and restraining cattle,” Banse explained. “This early exposure prepares students for real-world veterinary challenges.”
The total cost for tuition and fees is roughly $55,000 annually, with the estimated cost of attendance—including housing, books, and other expenses—ranging from $79,000 to $84,000, depending on the year of study.
Banse expressed enthusiasm for building on the momentum of their inaugural class. “We are so excited to have our inaugural students here, setting the foundation for those who come after them. We’re looking forward to welcoming the class of 2031.”
