Independence County has been declared a disaster area due to extreme heat and prolonged dry conditions, County Judge Kevin Jeffery announced Saturday morning.
Jeffery issued the declaration, stating that the sustained drought poses significant threats to life, property, and agricultural operations across the county. While the measure facilitates local emergency coordination, it does not provide access to state or federal funding.
The U.S. Drought Monitor currently classifies the county under severe to extreme drought conditions, impacting 100 percent of residents. This designation underscores widespread concerns about the ongoing dryness.
A countywide burn ban remains in effect, mirroring restrictions across all of Region 8. Dry conditions across Arkansas have placed the state at high risk for wildfires, with burn bans now active in 68 of the state's 75 counties.
Officials urge residents to remain alert to fire hazards and abide by burn ban rules until conditions improve.
