Drivers preparing for holiday travel will see no relief at the gas pump this weekend. According to AAA, the national average price for regular unleaded gasoline has reached $4.08 per gallon—the highest ever recorded for August.

In Arkansas, drivers are paying an average of $3.70 per gallon this week. Neighboring states are seeing similar prices, with Missouri at $3.79 and Tennessee at $3.69 per gallon.

Prices for diesel fuel have also hit historic highs. This week, diesel is averaging $5.85 per gallon nationally, up from $5.78 just before the weekend began.

AAA attributes the elevated prices to continued pressure on oil markets, making it an expensive time for many families planning trips as the summer season nears its end.
