Austin Simmons made his debut for the Missouri Tigers with an electric performance Thursday night, leading the team to a 54-14 win over Arkansas-Pine Bluff in the season opener at Faurot Field. Simmons, a transfer from Ole Miss, threw for 252 yards and four touchdowns in less than two quarters of play, going 17-of-19 before yielding to backup quarterback Matt Zollers late in the first half.
Simmons’ top target of the night was Donovan Olugbode, who recorded eight receptions for 116 yards and two touchdowns. While Tigers coach Eli Drinkwitz praised Olugbode's contributions, he noted a costly first-half fumble that ended another promising drive. Jamal Roberts, who filled in for All-America running back Ahmad Hardy, added to the Tigers' offense with 47 rushing yards and a touchdown. Hardy remains sidelined as he continues to recover from a gunshot injury sustained earlier this year.
Missouri seized control of the game from its opening series. Simmons completed all seven pass attempts, finishing the drive with a 25-yard touchdown pass to Shaun Terry II. By halftime, Simmons had thrown four touchdown passes, including a 14-yarder to Olugbode and a long scoring strike to fellow Ole Miss transfer Cayden Lee. Roberts’ rushing touchdown in the second quarter helped push the lead to 40-0 by the break.
Arkansas-Pine Bluff (1-1) struggled to find rhythm on offense throughout the game. Quarterbacks Garrison Davis and Jack Schierholz split snaps, but neither was able to produce consistent results. Schierholz managed a touchdown pass in the fourth quarter, and Za’Marion Webber added a 27-yard touchdown run, but UAPB had no answer for Missouri’s dominant first half.
Missouri, ranked No. 25 in the AP poll, opens the season with high expectations, driven in part by key additions like Simmons, who transferred after losing the starting quarterback job at Ole Miss due to injury. Thursday’s game provided a strong start for the Tigers as they look to build on last year’s success.
