The Arkansas Cattlemen’s Association honored a White County farmer as Producer of the Year and recognized other industry leaders during its 68th annual convention and trade show held in Fort Smith.
Chris Smith of Jay H Farms in Romance received the association’s top award. A first-generation farmer, Smith built a 2,300-acre cattle and hay operation alongside his wife, Nesha, and daughter, Jalyn. Their farm currently manages approximately 500 commercial cows and more than 75 registered Braunvieh females. The family actively supports youth livestock programs, including FFA and 4-H.
Sam Cecil was presented with the Aubrey Blackmon Lifetime Service Award for his extensive contributions to the association. Cecil has served for more than 15 years on the executive committee as Area 2 vice president. He also chairs the association’s legislative and policy committee and has served over 12 years on the Arkansas Beef Council.
Dr. Kirsten Midkiff was named Producer Educator of the Year in recognition of her efforts to educate cattle producers about emerging animal health threats such as the Asian longhorned tick, Theileria, and New World screwworm. Midkiff also played a pivotal role in organizing the association’s inaugural Youth Stockmanship Contest.
The President’s Award, presented every other year, was given to Maybelle Castera of White County. Castera, a military veteran and Angus producer, has been a dedicated local leader, mentor, and membership recruiter. She also chaired the association’s leadership class.
On the trade show floor, Fayetteville FFA triumphed over Nevada 4-H to win the Beef Quiz Bowl, a competition sponsored by the Arkansas Beef Council. The event challenges students on topics such as beef production, cattle management, and animal science.
The two-day convention featured educational sessions addressing cattle markets, herd management, genetics, and animal health.
The Arkansas Cattlemen’s Association, established to support the state’s cattle industry, continues to highlight the work and dedication of local producers and agricultural leaders through its annual awards and events.
