Gov. Sarah Huckabee Sanders has named Little Rock Fire Capt. Melissa Peabody as the latest honoree in the Faces of Arkansas program, a monthly series that highlights stories of ordinary Arkansans making extraordinary contributions.
Peabody, a 20-year veteran of the Little Rock Fire Department, leads an engine company at Station 2, where she is the only woman on her crew. The department counts approximately 450 firefighters, with 20 to 25 of them being women, according to the governor’s office profile.
Peabody’s path to the firefighting profession began in her childhood, visiting her father—a firefighter himself—at the station. Although he initially tried to discourage her from pursuing the job when Little Rock opened hiring, Peabody joined the department anyway.
The state profile details her journey of adapting to the physically demanding role, often working to define success on her terms rather than measuring herself against male colleagues. Despite the challenges, she excelled, working through significant milestones in her life, including two pregnancies. She managed to keep both pregnancies private for four months, remained on shift until a week before giving birth, and returned to work soon afterward.
In July 2024, Peabody added the title of fire marshal to her credentials, giving her the ability to investigate fires and make arrests in arson cases. She expressed a strong interest in moving into fire investigation full time after retiring in about eight years. She noted that this investigative work is what drives her passion for the job.
Her youngest daughter has shown a budding interest in following in her footsteps, often visiting Station 2 to climb ropes and practice rescue drills. She, too, has expressed an interest in becoming a firefighter when she grows up.
The Faces of Arkansas series showcases honorees with portraits, written profiles, and videos, with the portraits displayed at the entrance to the governor’s office in the Capitol. The governor’s office stated that the initiative highlights individuals who exemplify the spirit of their communities, overcome challenges, or play critical roles in their industries.
