Dr. Esosa Ukponmwan has joined the Baxter Health Nephrology Clinic and will begin seeing patients in early September, the organization has announced. Ukponmwan joins a team led by Dr. Grant Mathews, along with nurse practitioners Joyce Stratmoen and Meagan Thitoff, providing care to kidney patients in north central Arkansas and southern Missouri.
Ukponmwan completed his nephrology fellowship at Kaiser Permanente San Francisco Medical Center, where he treated patients with both acute and chronic kidney conditions, including those requiring dialysis. He collaborated with transplant teams at the University of California San Francisco, providing care to patients before and after kidney transplant surgeries. His experience also includes working with patients undergoing hemodialysis—a process in which a machine filters waste and toxins from the blood—and peritoneal dialysis, an at-home treatment involving the abdominal lining.
Before his fellowship, Ukponmwan completed an internal medicine residency at Michigan State University, where he also served as clinical faculty, teaching medical students. His academic background includes a master's degree in public health with a focus on epidemiology, and he has conducted clinical research on the interactions between kidney disease, heart disease, and diabetes.
His service extends beyond clinical practice. Ukponmwan has volunteered at free clinics in Michigan, cared for individuals living with HIV in Houston, and assisted with Hurricane Harvey relief efforts.
“His clinical training, his research background, and his years of service to underserved patients all point to a physician who genuinely cares about people,” said Ron Peterson, president and CEO of Baxter Health. “Our kidney patients and their families are going to be in very good hands.”
