The Craighead County Sheriff’s Office is urging residents to plan ahead and make safe driving decisions during the Labor Day weekend, emphasizing the serious consequences of driving under the influence.
In Arkansas, it is illegal to operate a vehicle with a blood alcohol content (BAC) above 0.08. For commercial drivers, the threshold is stricter at 0.04, while those under 21 can face DWI charges with a BAC above 0.02.
Assistant Chief Deputy Matt Kirby of the Craighead County Sheriff’s Office advised that preparation is the best course of action to avoid legal trouble.
"Have a ride. Have a plan. If you’re going to go out and drink and have fun, have a plan on how to get back home," Kirby said.
He outlined the possible repercussions of a DWI arrest, stressing both the legal and financial burdens it can impose. "Up to a year in the county jail. You could lose your driver’s license. Your car insurance is going to go up. And there’s a fine associated with it," Kirby explained.
The Craighead County Sheriff’s Office is encouraging everyone to prioritize safety by designating a sober driver or using other transportation options if consuming alcohol.
