The University of Arkansas Community College at Batesville (UACCB) has joined with the White River Firefighter Training Association and regional fire departments to establish a Firefighter Rookie School. Set to begin on October 6, 2026, the 38-week program will provide comprehensive training based on the Firefighter I and II curriculum developed by the Arkansas Fire Training Academy (AFTA) in Camden.

Pleasant Plains Fire Chief Stacey Caplener emphasized the need for this collaborative effort, stating, “We want to support the next generation of firefighters in our area. By working with the Arkansas Fire Training Academy and UACCB, we can make sure they have a good foundation.”

The initiative involves substantial community and fire department support. Local departments and the chiefs of the White River Training Association have contributed essential resources, such as vehicles, equipment, and instructors. Searcy Fire Department Captain Robert Beel, a seasoned firefighter with 19 years of experience in fire science, emergency services, and training, will serve as the program’s Lead Instructor.

Additionally, Vital Link EMS has donated a new television and computer to the Fire Training Center on UACCB’s campus, further demonstrating community support. Interest in the Rookie School has already been significant, with enrollment inquiries underway.

Dr. Becky Warren, representing UACCB, highlighted the importance of the collaboration, saying, “By bringing together UACCB, the White River Firefighter Training Association, the Arkansas Fire Training Academy, and local fire departments, we are creating a strong pathway for individuals to receive high-quality training while helping our communities build and sustain a well-prepared emergency response workforce.”

Prospective students must complete specific prerequisites and clearances before registering for the program. This includes the completion of certifications required to participate in Firefighter I testing. Detailed information about these requirements is available through UACCB.

Enrollment is open to individuals working with local fire departments, including volunteer firefighters. Financial assistance is available through the Arkansas Workforce Challenge Scholarship, which can cover the full cost of the program. Current firefighters may also enroll in individual courses to address specific training needs.
