Arkansas Governor Sarah Huckabee Sanders announced a plan Friday to expand health care services in rural areas like Baxter County. The initiative includes funding and resources to bolster access to specialty care, telehealth services, and wellness programs.
Baxter Health, a key health care provider in the region, will play a major role in implementing the program. Ron Peterson, Chief Executive Officer of Baxter Health, described the program as a significant enhancement for rural health care. Specific elements of the initiative include improvements to clinical communication, expanded telehealth capabilities, and a new mobile unit dedicated to wellness checks.
The funding also supports the THRIVE program, designed to improve rural health outcomes, and the PACT program, which focuses on increasing access to specialty care in underserved areas. Additional applications submitted by Baxter Health are expected to further support regional initiatives, according to Tobias Pugsley, Vice President of Marketing and Communications for the organization.
Local health care leaders view the program as a meaningful step toward addressing ongoing challenges in rural health access. "This funding is truly exciting for our patients and health care teams," Peterson said.
The initiative reflects broader efforts to improve rural health care across Arkansas by addressing gaps in resources and technology while prioritizing innovative solutions like telemedicine and mobile care units.
