Two Main Street buildings in downtown Walnut Ridge were demolished after structural problems were discovered during preparations for use by Provalus, an Alabama-based technology and business services company.
Mayor Charles Snapp explained that workers encountered significant ceiling damage while readying the structures for the company, forcing the demolition. Snapp emphasized that the surrounding buildings were not affected by the structural issues or the demolition.
Provalus had announced plans in September 2024 to establish operations in Walnut Ridge, intending to occupy both buildings. With the original plan no longer feasible, the city is developing alternative options. According to Snapp, current plans involve constructing a steel structure designed to withstand seismic activity in the same location.
The city is also working with the Arkansas Economic Development Commission (AEDC) to secure an extension for a grant needed to finalize the project's funding and move forward with the new construction. Snapp said the economic impact of the project could be significant, estimating it would create 200 to 250 jobs directly, 70 additional spinoff jobs, and generate $13.4 million annually for the local economy.
To accommodate the expected influx of employees, the city has acquired additional lots near the railroad tracks and the Regions Bank building for parking. These spaces are projected to support 200 to 220 vehicles and are located within a block of the planned worksite. While the availability of parking may not meet the total capacity of employees, Snapp noted it would be sufficient given that Provalus intends to operate in three shifts, with most of its workers scheduled during the daytime.
Snapp expressed optimism about moving the project forward, saying, "The people would not be here at one time. Once they’re operating, they would be operating three shifts, with the primary shift being a daytime shift."
The timeline for finalizing the grant and beginning construction remains tied to the approval process with the AEDC. Despite the setback of the demolitions, the city continues to work toward securing Provalus’ commitment to downtown Walnut Ridge and the promising economic benefits the project could bring.
