Renovations are set to begin at Walnut Ridge's city baseball and softball fields as part of a $150,000 project approved by the city council in August.
The improvements will include the installation of new aluminum bleachers, extended awnings, paved walkways, and upgraded dugouts, according to Mayor Charles Snapp. The current bleachers and awnings, some of which are up to 50 years old, are being replaced, with one awning already removed due to safety concerns, said the mayor.
The renovations aim to make the ballpark more accessible and comfortable for spectators. Plans include shaded areas under awnings designed to accommodate both wheelchairs and lawn chairs. Double-wide walkways will also be installed between bleacher rows to ensure easier movement, Snapp noted.
“I believe [spectators are] going to find a lot more comfort, a lot more shade, and ease of accessibility,” said Snapp. “You’ll be able to get everywhere without having to get off the asphalt or the concrete.”
Additional updates will include upgraded bullpens with safety gates to protect from stray fly balls, as well as improved fencing and ramps leading into dugouts.
“We’re going to do the double wide walkways between the seats to where if both rows are full and you’re in the front row, you don’t have my knees sticking in your back,” Snapp explained of the planned improvements.
The goal, according to Snapp, is to create a "first-class" park for the community. Construction is expected to be completed in time for the next ball season.
