A minor earthquake was detected in Izard County on Sunday morning, according to preliminary data from the U.S. Geological Survey.
The tremor, measuring a magnitude of 1.7, was recorded at 10:36 a.m. Its epicenter was located approximately 2.2 miles northwest of Mount Pleasant, a small town situated south of Melbourne. The quake occurred at a depth of roughly 2.5 miles below the surface.
The site of the earthquake lies about 16.7 miles north-northwest of Batesville and 41.4 miles southeast of Mountain Home. No damage or injuries have been reported in connection with the event.
Low-magnitude earthquakes such as this one are not uncommon in Arkansas. The U.S. Geological Survey continuously monitors seismic activity across the state and catalogues events ranging from minor tremors to more significant seismic occurrences.
