Jonesboro, Ark.—A Paragould man who threatened police officers and assaulted his girlfriend has been sentenced to a year under suspended imposition of sentence after pleading guilty to misdemeanor charges. A related felony charge was dropped. Marcus James Taylor, 26, was arrested on Feb. 28 following a domestic disturbance in the 1400 block of Lakewood Drive. According to an affidavit, the incident began as an argument between Taylor and his girlfriend and escalated when Taylor struck her with his fists and shoved her to the ground. The victim sustained a hand injury when she fell onto broken glass. Fearing for her safety, the woman fled to a neighbor's house and asked them to call police, the affidavit stated. When officers arrived on the scene, Taylor reportedly made several threats directed at law enforcement and their families. Court documents detail that Taylor told one officer, “I will shoot and kill you, your wife, and your children.” At a hospital where he was later transported, Taylor allegedly made eye contact with another officer and said, “I’ll have inmates hire people to beat your family and you up outside of the cops,” or similar remarks. Taylor was charged with first-degree terroristic threatening, a Class D felony, along with second-degree terroristic threatening and third-degree domestic battery, both Class A misdemeanors. However, on Tuesday, Aug. 25, he pleaded guilty to the misdemeanor charges. The felony charge was dismissed under nolle prosequi, meaning prosecution of that charge will not proceed. Taylor’s sentence includes 12 months of suspended imposition, meaning that he could face further legal consequences if additional offenses are committed during that period.
