Arkansas State University and the University of Central Arkansas soccer teams delivered an exhilarating finish to their Sunday evening match at the A-State Soccer Complex, ultimately drawing 2-2 after a flurry of late goals.
Both teams entered the non-conference contest winless on the season, with matching records of 0-2-1. Throughout the first half, defense dominated. Central Arkansas attempted seven shots but only managed a single on-target effort, which was saved by Red Wolves senior goalkeeper Taylor Sweat. Arkansas State struggled offensively as well, logging just two attempts—one a controlled header from Anne Crotwell that was easily corralled by the UCA keeper, and another off-target strike from Elleigh Newcomb.
Momentum shifted in the second half when Central Arkansas capitalized on a defensive lapse by the Red Wolves. The Bears netted the game’s opening goal early in the half, pushing Arkansas State into an uphill battle. The home team failed to register another shot until the 75th minute, as their offensive frustrations mounted.
A turning point came in the 83rd minute when UCA committed a foul in the penalty box, halting play. Arkansas State's Lu Flores calmly converted the ensuing penalty kick, delivering a powerful strike into the right side of the net to tie the match. The equalizer ignited a fast-paced conclusion.
Central Arkansas wasted no time regaining the lead, scoring just four minutes later during a counterattack. A decisive shot from the top of the box found the back of the net, leaving the Red Wolves on the verge of a home loss with only three minutes remaining.
However, Arkansas State wasn’t finished. A misplayed goal kick by Central Arkansas gave the Red Wolves an opportunity in the final moments. Zoie Kempf sent a well-placed volley into the penalty area, where freshman Maddy Tapley made her mark. Tapley’s header found the net, marking her first collegiate goal and securing another tie for Arkansas State with less than 90 seconds on the clock.
The Red Wolves are set to host Stephen F. Austin University on Thursday, August 27. Kickoff is scheduled for 4 p.m. at the A-State Soccer Complex.
