A wildfire in Union County has burned more than 2,100 acres, forcing road closures and evacuations in the affected area. Multiple agencies are on the scene combatting the blaze, which began on Sunday evening.
According to the Union County Sheriff’s Department, Lawson Road/Highway 129 has been closed to all traffic except for residents and essential personnel. Pine Tree Road is closed completely until further notice. Drivers traveling near the area are urged to take alternate routes.
Evacuations have been ordered for Lawson Road between Moro Bay Highway and Nick Springs Road, as well as surrounding areas. Those seeking shelter can go to the El Dorado Municipal Auditorium or Immanuel Baptist Church.
The National Interagency Fire Center reports that the fire began around 5 p.m. on August 20 and believes it was caused by natural factors. By early Monday morning, crews from multiple agencies were still working to contain the flames.
Officials are urging caution for anyone driving in the area, as visibility may be reduced due to smoke. No injuries or damage to structures have been reported at this time.
