The Baxter County Airport has been awarded a $397,000 grant from the Arkansas Aeronautics Commission to construct a new hangar and supporting infrastructure, officials confirmed Thursday.
The funds will be utilized to build an 80-by-60-foot clear-span hangar, along with an access taxiway and apron to serve the facility. Baxter County Judge Kevin Litty stated that bids for the project have already been solicited, and construction is set to begin in the coming months.
"The hangar will be another great addition to the airport," Litty said, adding that continued upgrades play a crucial role in the airport's long-term goal of securing a longer runway. "Every time the airport grows, it brings us closer to that goal."
Arkansas State Representative Stetson Painter highlighted the importance of these enhancements, emphasizing the impact of the airport as vital infrastructure for the region. "It’s good to see money coming back to this part of the state," Painter noted.
According to Litty, the county has funds available in its general fund to begin construction, though state reimbursement will cover the project upon completion. The airport anticipates finishing both the hangar and associated infrastructure by the end of the year.
Located in Midway, the Baxter County Airport serves as a key regional transportation hub. Officials believe the expansion will enhance the facility’s capacity and utility for both general and commercial aviation in North Arkansas.
