JONESBORO, Ark. — A local hotel employee faces felony and misdemeanor charges after allegedly using a guest’s debit card information for personal purchases.

Roshan Acharya, an employee at the Econo Lodge in Jonesboro, has been charged with theft of property involving a credit or debit card, a Class D felony. He also faces misdemeanor counts of fraudulent use of a credit card and theft of $1,000 or less, according to court records.

Jonesboro police began investigating on Aug. 15 after a woman reported unauthorized charges on her debit card shortly after staying at the Econo Lodge. The charges included $33.77 for Papa Johns, $49.03 for Uber Eats, and $7.99 for Amazon Prime, according to a probable cause affidavit.

The woman told police she had provided her card to a hotel employee during check-in. Investigators later traced the phone number associated with the disputed purchases back to Acharya, who worked at the hotel.

On Aug. 19, Acharya voluntarily came to the Jonesboro Police Department for questioning. After being advised of his rights, Acharya admitted to using the woman’s card information to make the Papa Johns and Uber Eats purchases, police said. However, the affidavit does not specify whether he admitted to the Amazon Prime charge.

Acharya remains in custody on a $7,500 bond set by Judge David Boling. His next court date is scheduled for Sept. 30 in Craighead County Circuit Court.

All defendants are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
